Seeing the World

Proposal

I plan to experiment with the technique of street photography on the streets of Hull. I am going to try two different approaches for this project, the first will be to study the subjects and photograph from a distance as if the photographer wasn't there. The second will be use a confrontational approach, putting myself as the photographer into the path or eye line of the subject so they are aware of the camera.

Initial shoot

On this shoot I wanted to capture the subject without them seeing the camera, which was quite hard to do with the lens I was using. However once I started taking photographs I felt I wanted to get the subject looking at the camera, most people did this anyway. The more photographs I took the more I found myself purposely stepping into the way of the subject or walking up to subject while taking their photograph, I found their reactions quite interesting as everyone reacted differently to the camera.

These are some of the photographs that I like from this shoot, I have played around with the colours slightly in photoshop. I wanted to try using colour in a similar way to Martin Parr, quite garish and bright.

I am quite happy with these photographs, I want to carry this approach on but try to photograph a mixture or people with different ethnic backgrounds as I feel this would best represent the 'Seeing the World' theme.

After a discussion with one of my tutors I have decided to not use the garish colours as I want my photographs to be original and not look like other photographers work.  I plan to use depth of field to create emphasis on the subjects of the photographs. if I can not do this when shooting the image I will use photoshop to blur out the background.

On my next shoot I will use a 70-300mm lens to try and photograph the subject before they notice the camera. I am also hoping by using this lens I will be able to create a shallower depth of field.
