Typologies

As part of our practical work this year we have been set a project based on Typologies

Typology is defined as; "the study of types or of the correspondence between them and the realities which they typify"

Famous photographers that have created typologies are;
Bernd and Hilla Becher

"They first began their still-ongoing project of systematically photographing industrial structures – water towers, blast furnaces, gas tanks, mine heads, grain elevators and the like –in the late 1950s. The seemingly objective and scientific character of their project was in part a polemical return to the 'straight' aesthetics and social themes of the 1920s and 1930s in response to the gooey and sentimental subjectivist photographic aesthetics that arose in the early post-war period."

After creating these as well as many other typologies they combined the images to create photographs like this;
Even though all the image all of the subjects slightly different when Becher's overlaysimilar subjects such as water towers the subject can still be seen.

Our project is to create a set of typologies and then overlay them to see the outcome. I have decided to base my typology on door numbers as each door number is slightly different and made out of different materials. As I will be visiting many front doors I plan to chose other objects found on them to do other typologies, I plan to photograph letterboxes as well as either keyholes or door handles. i think the typologies together will work well.

I plan to start my work on a cloudy day as I would say cloudy days are the most frequent weather at the moment so will give me the most opportunity for similar lighting on my subjects.

My Typology of door numbers;

I have also overlayed all the images and here is the result;
I feel I could have improved on this project by visiting a wider range of houses to get a more varied typology. I think I could also add to the number of door numbers shown here and perhaps do other typologies of other numbers.
