Vanitas

Proposal

For this module I plan to conduct thorough research into the theme of Vanitas, from this research I want to know;
  • What Vanitas means?
  • Who started using Vanitas as a theme?
  • How Vanitas pictures are created?
  • and Why is Vanitas used as theme for paintings?
I will then research about Large Format Cameras, as I have used them before but I feel I need a refresher before I start using one. I also want to look into the different movements the cameras can do and the results the movements create.

I might have a look at different lighting techniques to use within the studio as well. After gathering this information I will create sketches of what I want the photographs to look like and the lighting set ups I will use.

For the first photograph I want to use similar objects that are in the original Vanitas paintings, I also want to use similar lighting conditions as I feel the lighting is an important part of the paintings. This will test my abilities of controlling light within the studio. The second photograph I will use models to show a modern take on the Vanitas theme, I want to show present day issues subtly within the photograph.

16th October - Results from shoot

I am very happy with the photographs I have from my shoot on Wednesday. The shoot went well didn't have too many major issues while in the studio. It took a while to become comfortable with using the large format camera.

Will post photographs later...

12th October - Plans for Studio

I have a studio booked for tomorrow and have planned what i am going to do. This first set up will be very similar to the paintings I have looked at in my research. I am going to use a fake skull and bones which will represent the inevitable death. I will use books and jewellery to represent wealth and intelligence for the person. I have melted a candle down half way, I have also melted other candles over it to emphasise the amount of time that has passed.  the last prop I will be using is dead white roses which I have discovered symbolises death.

The second photograph will have two models in it, I want to play with the idea of vanity as well as symbolise death. The model in the front will be female and applying make up, she will quite happy and wearing modern clothing. The model in the back will be placed so he can be seen lurking behind her, he will be wearing a hoody with the hood up. I think this will represent a modern idea for a 'bringer of death' and violence. The hooded model will also play with the idea of the grim reaper, the hooded creature that is always waiting for the death of others.
